Stonemead House Dental Practice - Jeremy Woodcock
About Jeremy Woodcock
Jeremy Woodcock qualified from Birmingham University Dental School in December 1980. He then joined the Royal Air Force as a dentist for a five year commission. He left with the rank of Squadron Leader in 1985.
During his years in the Air Force, he developed an interest in endodontic (root canal) treatment and in continued learning within the profession. The RAF years equipped him to deal with the special problems experienced by pilots and divers who suffer pressure pain from the teeth (barodontalgia). Wishing to maintain high standards, he set out to take further examinations in dentistry and in 1988 he succeeded in passing the MGDS examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Since 1988 Jeremy has lectured extensively on a number of dental subjects in the UK and abroad. He's also written a number of published articles, chapters in textbooks and manuals and been an adviser on dental matters to various UK organisations.
1992 saw the birth of a new dental organisation, which had the stated aim of improving standards of patient care by continuing education of dentists. This organisation is the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (FGDP) and is based at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Jeremy was elected to the Faculty Board at the first elections in 1993 and he served for six years before leaving to spend more time at the practice!
For the year 97/98, Jeremy was elected as vice Dean of the Faculty and he regarded this as a great honour.
Jeremy is still committed to quality of clinical care. He remains active locally as Treasurer of the Oxford Division of the FGDP and is on local education committees. He has an interest in dental research within practice and has written two national research projects which are currently underway and will be published soon. His special interest is in cracked teeth and his ongoing research in this field may ultimately lead to a PhD. Jeremy was awarded the Fellowship of the FGDP(UK) in 2003.
He has a Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and is able to use a number of techniques to make anxious patients feel more at ease.
Jeremy is now an examiner for the Implant Diploma at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and he is a mentor for the Diploma in Dental Implantology of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Although the practice is still a ‘general practice’ which offers almost all aspects of dentistry, there is a distinct concentration on advanced restorative dentistry. More than half of Jeremy’s time is spent on major reconstructive dentistry.
The practice employs two dental therapists on a sessional basis. A Dental Therapist is able to perform many routine dental tasks and can be regarded as half way between a dentist and a hygienist.
